Punta Gorda, Fla. (August 25, 2026) Dr. Temple Grandin, world-renowned author, autism advocate, and professor of animal science, drew close to 500 attendees to the Babcock Ranch Field House on Saturday, August 22, for a free community event as part of Family Initiative’s Parent Group Speaker Series.
Close to 500 parents, educators, and community members filled the Field House to hear Dr. Grandin’s talk, “Great Minds Are Not All the Same,” in which she shared her firsthand perspective on living with autism and encouraged the audience to focus on strengths rather than limitations. Drawing on her personal experience and decades of advocacy, she spoke about early intervention, developing practical skills, preparing individuals for meaningful employment, and creating opportunities for greater independence and success. She also outlined what she believes the education system needs to do to better serve students on the autism spectrum.
Before the presentation, Dr. Grandin met privately with Family Initiative staff, including staff from Thrive Academy, Family Initiative’s private autism specialty school, for an informal Q&A. Following her talk, she stayed for an extended book signing, greeting attendees individually and signing copies of her books for families, students, and educators. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office was also on hand to support ASD families throughout the event.

The event was the latest installment of Family Initiative’s ongoing monthly Speaker Series, which focuses on building understanding, access, and resources for individuals and their families affected by autism.
